$50 solidarity credit (has now ended)

Help reduce your power bill or lend a hand to others who are doing it tough.
Every member customer gets it – it’s your choice where it goes.

This program has now ended. We’ve replaced it with our participatory budgeting process. The below is left for the historical record only.

We have all felt the impact of COVID-19 on our lives, and this crisis has reinforced the need for mutual support and co-operation.

As the scale of this crisis became clear, we at Cooperative Power worked through what we could do to help build solidarity. The way we work is that we pass wholesale energy usage costs through to our customer members for a small membership charge. From this membership, we get $50 in revenue per customer per year which goes to our mission to fight for a democratic and renewable energy future for all.

As a small co-operative, the biggest difference we can make is to give everything we have. So given the unprecedented times we’re all currently experiencing, we have decided to forego all of our revenue for 12 months from 1 April 2020. Instead, we will pass this revenue directly back to those who need it most both domestically and internationally. Half of the solidarity credits go to those who need it locally, and half go to our partner Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA to support energy democracy programs in the Asia-Pacific.

Every single customer member will get an annual $50 solidarity credit.

Those experiencing income disruptions or decreases can choose to receive the $50 solidarity credit.

Those of us getting a decent income can choose to pass on the $50 solidarity credit to those who need it.

In addition, those who need solidarity credit will get on top of their $50 initial solidarity credit a fair and equitable share of credits from those who are in a position to give solidarity. We also know that times change, so we will work hard to set up a system where you can change your status.
